FAQs

Got questions? I’ve got answers! I hear you, choosing an effective psychotherapist is like choosing a life partner - chemistry and trust are an essential combination in a successful relationship. Take a look at some answers to the most frequently asked questions and requests below.

WHAT IS THERAPY AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

Therapy (often referred to as counseling, psychotherapy, or talk therapy) is a space where you meet with a trained mental health professional to help address issues concerning your mental wellbeing and emotional health. It offers a wide range of benefits and it can provide a nonjudgmental safe space where you can process emotions, past and/or current life experiences, as well as learn effective coping mechanisms to improve your quality of life.

There is often a misconception that therapy is only for people who have been diagnosed with a mental health condition however many people may choose to go to therapy for a variety of reasons. Some seek therapy to get some support due to an unexpected change and/or to identify ways to effectively manage stressors while others go to therapy for personal exploration and growth.

WHAT IS WELLNESS?

Wellness integrates the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life. It is considered a holistic approach to improving a person’s quality of life or state of being. The National Institute for Wellness defines wellness as “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.”

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE FIRST THERAPY SESSION?

The first session is called the intake session and typically lasts longer (approximately 50-75 minutes) than a regular 50-minute session. The purpose of the intake session is for the therapist and the client to develop therapeutic rapport. The therapist will explain the therapeutic process, gather information about the client and the client’s background. Additionally, at the intake session, the therapist assists the client to explore individual needs and collaborates with the client to identify goals in therapy. Intake sessions usually take about 2-3 sessions.

HOW LONG IS A SESSION AND HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET?

Sessions are typically around 45-50 minutes on a weekly basis. Bi-weekly sessions can be a good option based on need, treatment goals, and symptom reduction. I usually recommend that clients attend 4-6 sessions weekly before transitioning to bi-weekly. As progress continues, we may meet twice a month. Client engagement in sessions and  consistent attendance greatly contribute to a successful outcome.
